The spring school holidays are almost here. The school holiday dates for Victorian government schools are 16 September to 1 October 2023. If the kids complain there’s nothing to do, check out this list of 110 activities to choose from happening in and around Melbourne these holidays.
1. See how animals are cared for at Healesville Sanctuary
16 September -1 October, Healesville. Let your curiosity come alive and discover what it is like to become a vet at Healesville Sanctuary and explore their new visitor experience in the Australian Wildlife Health Centre. Kids enter free every day of the school holidays.
2. Celebrate your love of seafood
15-17 September, San Remo. Head to the TIDAL Seafood Festival and celebrate the history of fishing, quality local seafood, see demonstrations and take part in family activities.
3. Catch a free ferry to Geelong
16 September – 1 October, Docklands, Geelong and Portarlington. Kids go free on Port Phillip Ferries these school holidays. Whether you’re exploring the beautiful waterfront of Geelong, enjoying the serene Portarlington Beach, or discovering the entertainment hub of Docklands, there’s an adventure waiting for you!
4. Meet life-sized walking dinosaurs
16 September – 1 October, Werribee. Step back in time 66 million years at DinoFest in Werribee Park to an age when dinosaurs roamed the earth! Discover how Tyrannosaurs grew from small dog-sized dinosaurs, to become the world’s most fearsome predator. 16 September – 1 October, Chadstone. LEGO DREAMZzz is coming to LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Melbourne these school holidays with the NEW & EXCLUSIVE 4D Movie ‘Z-Blob Rescue Rush’.
6. Join in the Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival
16 September – 1 October, Dandenong. The theme this year is “Up in the Sky” and features a series of workshops and activities for kids aged 5-12.
7. Celebrate the migration of the Bogong Moth at the Melbourne Zoo
16 September – 1 October, Parkville. Find the Moth Cave, by following the moths pathways across the zoo.Once in the cave the children can make their own ‘flying’ Bogong Moth which they can take home with them or colour in a moth and stick it to the Moth Cave wall, just as Bogong Moths do in the high country caves. Kids enter free every day of the school holidays.
8. Watch a pig race
16 September – 1 October, Balnarring, The Rain, Hayne and Shine Farmyard is open every day of the holidays with special school holiday activities, including daily pig racing at 2pm and showbags for sale.
9. Get on board the Wizardry Express
16 September, City. Not only will you enjoy a steam train ride leaving from Flinders Street Station, but there will be lots of photo opportunities and craft activities as well. Everyone is encouraged to dress in their wizard wear.
10. Celebrate Mexican culture
16 September, Preston. The Viva Mexico Festival is on from 1pm to 1am or at Retropolis in Preston. Organised by Mexicans for Melbourne, this fiesta features mariachis, tacos, street food, folk dance, kids activities, pinatas, a tequila masterclass, Mexican market and more.
11. Laugh at a kids’ comedy show
16, 17 and 30 September, North Melbourne. Winni Wizard is the Wonderfully Wacky Wizard in an afternoon of laughter and silliness in a comedy show for kids at Club Voltaire.

16 September – 1 October, Ballarat. A flight of dragons have landed at Kryal Castle and they’re ready to meet you! From hatchlings to full sized fire-breathers these beautiful beasts will be available every day of the school holidays. 16 September – 1 October, Arthurs Seat. The Arthurs Seat Eagle Spring Festival will deliver range of different experiences. Don’t miss the Light Festival as part of the Spring Festival from 21 September with stunning illuminations and lanterns.

16 and 23 September, Forest Hill. Little garden enthusiasts will learn the vital stages of planting, cultivating, and nurturing their very own green harvest at the inaugural Kids Gardening Club at Strathdon House and Orchard Precinct.

Ongoing, City. Submerged is an interactive digital experience within SEA LIFE Melbourne, taking guests on a digital journey through living light inspired by the bioluminescent underwater world. Submerged tells the story of the dazzling firefly squid and other majestic ocean animals. Suitable to all ages, Submerged is a large-scale temporary exhibition open until December 2023 while SEA LIFE Melbourne’s 2.2 million litre Oceanarium display undergoes renovations.
106. Get hands on with immersive play at Chaos Lab before it finishes
Until 1 October, Docklands. Chaos Lab is a limited time experience that’s been in Melbourne since January and will have its last day at the end of the school holidays. It’s the ideal place for the little ones to have fun creating and playing. At Chaos Lab, expect a graffiti wall, slime station, a ball pit, and many more surprises at their disposal
107. Explore a world of mythical creatures and real animals
Until 8 October, Carlton. The Fantastic Beasts: The Wonder of Nature exhibition is in its final weeks at the Melbourne Museum. Created by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Themed Entertainment and the Natural History Museum London, this extraordinary exhibition explores the links between the magical creatures of the wizarding world and the remarkable animals of our natural world.
108. Recreate your favourite moments from Friends
Until 26 November, Docklands. The recently opened immersive Friends experience is full of nostalgia-packed, interactive sets from the beloved sitcom where you can recreate your favourite scenes and iconic moments.
109. See Lego minifigures living in the relics of humanity
Until 28 January, Carlton. Relics: A New World Rises at the Melbourne Museum is set in a future long after humanity’s reign, RELICS tells the story of a world where LEGO® minifigures have risen from the debris to craft intricate civilisations in discarded human artefacts, each one inspired by the object they now call home.
110. Play an immersive, interactive Among Us style game
Until 30 September, Docklands. Fans of the hugely popular online game Among Us will revel in this immersive and interactive game. Covering 500sqm and housed within twelve converted shipping containers, Saboteurs is an immersive, interactive space-themed game with a Moon base-themed play space.
