The blockbuster musical Groundhog Day The Musical is set to make its Australian premiere at Melbourne’s iconic Princess Theatre in January 2024, where it will run for an exclusive season.
This is the first time the production will have been staged outside of London and New York. Melbourne will be the first Australian city to host the musical, following a record-breaking season in London earlier this year.
Groundhog Day, the Musical is based on the classic 1993 comedy movie starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. It tells the story of a TV weatherman who is covering the annual Groundhog Day event in a small US town, who becomes trapped in a time loop and is forced to relive the day over and over.
The musical has been critically acclaimed on both Broadway and the West End. The musical was a reinterpretation of the film from the creative team who brought Matilda the Musical alive – led by renowned Australian singer-songwriter Tim Minchin.
Announcing the musical’s planned arrival in Melbourne, Minchin said, “I have waited seven years for this moment! Groundhog Day The Musical, like I, has a unique mixture of darkness and light, of head and heart, and of complexity and joy, and I’ve been convinced since its first iteration that Australians will love it!”
“I’m so excited that the run is going to be in Melbourne, the city I lived in when I wrote my break-out comedy shows, and the place where – when things weren’t going so well – I learned how important it is to find the beauty and hope in the day to day.” he said.
The waitlist for tickets is now available.
