There’s something about watching a movie on the big screen that even the best home cinema set-up can’t compete with. During the height of the pandemic, many films went straight to streaming without being given a cinematic release. This included three Pixar films – Soul, Turning Red and Luca that were all sent to the streaming platform Disney+;
If you were bummed that you never got to experience any of these films on the big screen, you’re in luck. They’ll be available to watch in participating cinemas in Melbourne as part of the new Pixar Film Fest. Each film will be screening in cinemas from one week only from Thursday 22 February to Wednesday 13 March.
Soul (2020) – 22-28 February
In Soul directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers, viewers follow Joe Gardner, a music teacher with a love for jazz, as he finds himself in the Great Before, a place where souls prepare for life on Earth. Teaming up with a quirky soul named 22, Joe goes on a journey to discover the true meaning of life. Featuring the voices of Jamie Foxx as Joe and Tina Fey as 22, Soul“offers a heartfelt exploration of what it means to live and find purpose. With stunning animation and a soulful soundtrack, this film is a captivating adventure, inviting audiences to reflect on life’s big questions.
Turning Red (2022) – 29 February – 6 March
In Turning Red directed by Domee Shi, audiences are introduced to Meilin Lee, a 13-year-old girl navigating the tumultuous waters of adolescence. When Mei experiences her first crush, she discovers a family secret that reveals she can transform into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited or emotional. As Mei grapples with her newfound abilities and the pressures of fitting in, she learns the importance of self-acceptance and embracing her true identity.
Luca (2021) – 7-13 March
Luca directed by Enrico Casarosa transports viewers to the spectacular Italian Riviera, where they meet Luca Paguro, a young sea monster who dreams of exploring the world above the surface. With his newfound friend, Alberto Scorfano, Luca embarks on a summer adventure filled with friendship, discovery, and plenty of gelato. However, their secret identities as sea creatures must remain hidden, leading to a series of comical escapades as they navigate the challenges of friendship and acceptance.
