Just in time for Easter, Australia’s best hot cross buns have been named – and you can find them right here in Victoria in the regional town of Shepparton.
North End Bakehouse in Shepparton was awarded the title of Australia’s Best Hot Cross Bun for the third consecutive year at the Baking Association of Australia’s Victoria Baking Show. Not only did they win the top prize for their hot cross buns, but they also secured the blue ribbon for their vanilla slice, marking the first time a single entrant has won both accolades in the association’s history.
The judges tasted entries from 130 bakeries across New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia to determine the ultimate hot cross bun. However, the competition extended beyond Easter treats, with judges critiquing a variety of baked goods, including sausage rolls, baguettes, pasties, pies, and flans.
North End Bakehouse’s winning buns are part of a lineage of innovative hot cross buns the Shepparton bakery has perfected over the years. Their trophy cabinet boasts numerous accolades, including first place for ‘most innovative hot cross bun’ in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, a remarkable achievement in itself.
