The Ancient Egypt for Kids exhibition is a free event that invites children to explore the mysteries of ancient Egypt through engaging activities. Running alongside the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition Pharaoh at NGV International, this interactive experience will captivate young visitors and their families with fascinating displays.
Children can marvel at ancient Egyptian objects from NGV’s Collection, including a decorated coffin lid over 2,500 years old. The exhibition space, with its gleaming gold walls and hieroglyph-covered surfaces, is designed to evoke the mystery and wonder of ancient Egyptian culture.
Highlights include a golden funerary head covering and an elaborately decorated coffin that reveals imagery of gods, goddesses, and hieroglyphic inscriptions. These artifacts bring the artistry and craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian society to life. Visitors can also see an inscribed stone slab depicting a family worshipping, offering insights into ancient customs and beliefs.
Interactive elements allow children to write their names in hieroglyphs and create unique keepsakes. A free play zone with blocks lets the youngest visitors build and rebuild pyramid formations, providing both entertainment and educational value.
A multimedia interactive quiz on ancient Egyptian geography, the Nile River, and the significance of the pharaohs, gods, and goddesses offers deeper insights into history. Additionally, an art activity book, Who Were the Ancient Egyptians? includes puzzles, quizzes, and art-making activities to further inform children about this great civilization.
Ancient Egypt for Kids is on display from 14 June – 6 October 2024 at NGV International, St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Free entry. Further information is available via the NGV website: NGV.MELBOURNE
