Prahran’s iconic skate park has reopened after a complete, state-of-the-art rebuild, with skaters from all over Melbourne flocking to the revamped complex, which has been visited by Tony Hawke and helped launch the career of many world champion skateboarders.
The Prahran Skate Park, which opened in the 1970s, was one of the very first public skate parks in Melbourne. It was temporarily closed in July 2023 and has been completely demolished, rebuilt and expanded in the past year.
Designed by international skate park designer Convic in consultation with pro skaters and the local community, the new space boasts a street circuit, mini ramp, rails, banks, plaza and contemporary obstacles and is being described as an “MCG for skaters”.
The newly reconstructed park is still home to Melbourne’s only full-size, public vert ramp, which has been used by the likes of Tony Hawke, Tas Pappas and Renton Millar.
The on-site basketball court has also had a refresh, including the installation of lights so play can continue into the evenings. Other features include landscaping, shade shelters and spectator spots.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Joe Gianfriddo, said the Council was pleased to deliver a contemporary, state-of-the-art skate park and basketball court that would serve the community well for many years.
“The Prahran Skate Park is one of the best skate parks in Australia and its significance is built into the very fabric of our community,” he said.
“I am thrilled that Council has redeveloped the site to retain its significance to the skating community, while being a welcoming and active place for families.”
The Prahran Skate Park is located in Essex Street, Prahran.
