The Melbourne Theatre Company’s upcoming play, English, will transport the audience to a small classroom in Iran in 2008. Here, Marjan is dedicatedly teaching English to a diverse group of adult learners, each driven by unique motivations.
For some, mastering the new language opens doors to opportunities abroad, while for others, it’s a way to connect more deeply with their grandchildren. As they prepare for their final exam, these strangers experience a whirlwind of emotions—tensions flare, connections form, and truths emerge.
English captures the imperfect, often humorous conversations that arise in a language lesson, highlighting the beauty and challenges of self-expression.
The ensemble cast, directed by Resident Director Tasnim Hossain, brings to life a richly woven narrative that explores the power of finding and embracing one’s voice. Starring Salme Geransar, known for her role in Mystery Road: Origin, and Osamah Sami from ABC’s Savage River, the play promises to leave a lasting impact on its audience.
