The Australian Ballet has unveiled its 2025 season. With the State Theatre closed for renos until 2027, all performances in Melbourne next year will instead be a the historic Regent Theatre.
Eight rows of seats are being removed from the theatre so that a full live orchestra can play for the ballet productions, putting them in full view of the audience instead of being hidden away in a traditional orchestra pit.
The program promises a stunning mix of both beloved classics and bold new works.
The season will feature two world premieres – Blake Works VI (The Barre Project) by renowned US choreographer William Forsythe, as well as a brand new work created by the Australian Ballet’s resident resident choreographer Stephanie Lake.
These shows will form part of a triple bill entitled Prism which will also future the Australian premier of Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces – described as “a streetscape that evolves to the works of composer Philip Glass”.
The 2025 season will get underway with Nijinsky by John Neumeier which is a tribute to choreographer and dancer Vaslav Nijinsky who is widely regarded as being the greatest dancer of the earliest part of the 20th century.

In Melbourne this will be followed by Carmen – which had positive reviews in Sydney in 2024. Sir Keith MacMillan’s Manon will also be performed in Melbourne, which is the story of a woman who is on her way to joining a convent but falls in love with a poor student, before being seduced by a powerful and wealthy man.
