Melbourne’s Federation Square will come alive with colour and celebration for Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, this Saturday 2 November, courtesy of MexVic – a non-profit organisation that seeks to promote and share Mexican culture in Victoria
This free, family-friendly event is an invitation to honour loved ones who have passed in a joyful, vibrant celebration of life.
Beginning at 12pm in the Atrium, attendees will find traditional Day of the Dead altars, also known as ofrendas, decorated with flowers, candles, and offerings to honor the spirits of the deceased.
A Mexican-inspired market will be open, offering face painting, children’s activities, and traditional treats like Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead).
At 3pm, participants dressed in Catrina outfits—traditional costumes with colorful skull face paint—will gather at the State Library of Victoria for a parade through the city, concluding back at Federation Square around 5pm.
The evening will feature a Day of the Dead ceremony and live performances of Mexican music and dance, bringing the culture to life in Melbourne.
