The Archibald Prize, Australia’s most prestigious portraiture award, will make a much-anticipated return to the Geelong Gallery in 2025.
Known for its compelling mix of celebrated and emerging artists, the exhibition offers an extraordinary glimpse into Australian identity and culture through portraiture and is a perennial favourite on the arts calendar.
The Archibald is presented by the Art Gallery of NSW and showcases portraits of some of the nation’s most renowned figures, ranging from artists and politicians to sporting icons and everyday heroes, providing a rich tapestry of Australian life.
Each year the “Archies” as they are affectionately known as then tour to regional galleries around Australia.
Geelong Gallery has previously hosted Archibald Prize exhibitions, consistently drawing impressive crowds and cementing its reputation as a vital venue for the arts in Victoria.
The 2025 exhibition is expected to feature a stellar lineup of entries, offering both traditional and avant-garde approaches to portraiture. It’s an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in artistic interpretations of the human spirit while engaging with the broader conversation about contemporary identity and culture.
More details on the exhibition’s schedule and accompanying events will be announced closer to the opening. The 2025 Archibald Prize tour will visit Geelong from 30 August to 9 November 2025.
