Lorne’s surf coast comes alive this month as the Powercor Lorne Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf return for their 45th year, celebrating the unmatched combination of community, sport, and tradition. These iconic events, organized by the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), are a testament to the town’s vibrant spirit and dedication to beach safety.
“These aren’t just races, they’re a testament to the dedication and passion of the Lorne community and our surf club,” says newly appointed Race Director and seasoned competitor Peter Williamson.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming participants of all abilities and celebrating the people involved that make these events so special,” he said.
The action kicks off on Friday 10 January, with the Mountain to Surf, an 8-kilometre run that weaves through lush forest trails and along the breathtaking Great Ocean Road.
On Saturday, 11 January the Pier to Pub—the largest open-water swim in Australia—takes center stage, attracting over 5,000 swimmers and 25,000 spectators.
Lorne SLSC President Heath Armstrong said” “Our goal is to offer a safe, inclusive, and memorable experience that showcases Lorne, the dedication of our lifesaving volunteers, and the inspiring enthusiasm of our community. These events continue to raise awareness for water safety and to sustain our club’s vital work.”
The weekend also draws elite athletes like Lani Pallister and Hayden Cotter, who will compete for their sixth consecutive win in the Pier to Pub’s prestigious ‘Superfish’ category.
The swim’s average finish time is 22 minutes, with Sam Sheppard’s 2016 record of just 10 minutes and 2 seconds still holding strong. Meanwhile, the Mountain to Surf challenges runners with its rugged terrain and spectacular views.
With proceeds supporting the Lorne SLSC’s vital lifesaving and water safety initiatives, the Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf events embody the community’s enduring commitment to health, fitness, and giving back. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a first-time participant, this weekend promises an unforgettable experience, showcasing the best of Lorne’s people, coastline, and camaraderie.
