Bearded is a new Australian musical by Sean Donehue and Nick Waxman, currently captivating audiences at Theatre Works in St Kilda. Set against the backdrop of Australia’s 2017 marriage equality debate, the production delves into the lives of queer best friends Ace and Bet as they navigate societal and familial pressures.
The narrative centres on Bet, whose father, Richard, is a conservative political candidate campaigning on “family values.”
To support his ambitions, Bet conceals their sexual identity by entering a “bearded” relationship—a heterosexual facade designed to mask one’s true orientation. This arrangement propels the characters into a journey that reflects on the importance of authenticity and acceptance in the face of societal pressures.
The songs in Bearded are a standout feature, blending sharp wit, heartfelt emotion, and infectious melodies that linger long after the curtain falls. The production’s choreography, crafted by Aadhya Wijegoonawardena, is vibrant and complements the energetic score.
Bearded provides an insightful commentary on events that happened in all-too-recent living memory, as the lives of LGBTQI+ Australians became political fodder in a debate that often turned ugly, causing deep pain. It’s a timely exploration of identity politics during this pivotal moment in Australia’s history.
The production balances humour and heart, delivering moments that jump back and forth between compelling, hilarious, and at times heart-wrenching. It’s a rainbow rollercoaster ride of emotions, but the ones that shine through and stay are hope, love and joy.
Bearded runs at Theatre Works at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda until 18 January. More information and tickets here.
