The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is set to usher in the Year of the Snake with a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration.
On 1-2 February 2025, NGV International will be buzzing with a flurry of activities that promise to captivate all ages.
From pop-up lion dances and Peking opera performances to an exclusive menu by renowned chef Victor Liong, this event is set to be an unforgettable experience.
Victor Liong, the Brunei-born, Melbourne-based chef, will present a special menu featuring dishes like Kashgari cumin lamb skewers, dumplings, five spiced duck sausage roll, and jasmine tea cream choux puffs.
In collaboration with HSBC, Liong will also take part in a Lunar New Year cuisine discussion with Jennifer Wong, host of ABC’s “Chopsticks or Fork?” Attendees will enjoy complimentary loose-leaf tea from Lee Ho Fook.
Children can join local artist Yiwon Park in decorating traditional Korean fortune pouches, while the NGV Garden will host mahjong games and free Häagen-Dazs ice cream in the afternoon.
The event lineup includes lively lion dances by the Hong De Lion Dance Association and the mesmerizing art of face-changing (bian lian) from Sichuan opera. Peking opera, performed by Mei Lan Fang’s Chinese Beijing Opera Friendship Association, will showcase elaborate costumes and vibrant face paint.
Visitors can also explore the NGV collection through tours in both Mandarin and English, revealing hidden treasures and lucky symbols in the International Decorative Arts collection.
