The Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale is set to host A Toast to Melba, a captivating exhibition honouring Australia’s first global opera star, Dame Nellie Melba. The exhibition brings together rarely seen treasures from Coombe Yarra Valley, Arts Centre Melbourne and the museum’s own collection.
Dame Nellie Melba (1861–1931) was renowned for her extraordinary soprano voice. Born Helen Porter Mitchell in Melbourne, she adopted the stage name “Melba” as a nod to her hometown.
Melba captivated audiences worldwide with her roles in operas such as La Bohème and Lucia di Lammermoor. Her career soared across Europe and America, making her one of the most celebrated singers of her era.
Visitors to the exhibition will journey through Melba’s life, from her glittering triumphs in Paris and London to her serene retreat in the Yarra Valley. Artefacts, photographs and personal letters reveal a deeply human side to the diva, showcasing her roles as a feminist, philanthropist, and loving grandmother.
