Melbourne’s Chinatown will once again come alive as the city celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year on Sunday 2 February 2025. Drawing more than 200,000 visitors last year, this vibrant festival blends tradition, culture, and community spirit, making it one of the city’s most anticipated events.
The iconic Millennium Dragon Parade will take centre stage, weaving through the streets with its dazzling display of color and energy. Visitors can also immerse themselves in cultural performances and feast on authentic Asian delicacies from some of the city’s best restaurants and street vendors.
New additions in 2025 promise to enhance the experience. A lively beer garden will pop up in the theatre district between Russell and Little Bourke Streets, offering a relaxed space for festivalgoers to enjoy a drink. Families can also enjoy a dedicated entertainment zone at the Golden Square car park, ensuring fun for all ages.
This year marks the Year of the Snake, a symbol of transformation, wisdom, and creativity in Chinese astrology.
Lord mayor Nick Reece said this is the biggest, loudest, most colourful day of the year in Melbourne’s Chinatown.
” We’re expecting more than 200,000 people to cheer on the Millenium Dragon Parade, dance alongside the Lions and enjoy some traditional Asian delicacies,” he said.
“Melbourne wouldn’t be what it is today without its Chinese heritage, and our ongoing modern, vibrant Chinese community.”
“I invite all Melburnians to embrace the Year of the Snake – shed old habits and embrace new connections,” he said.
