The future of grocery shopping has arrived in Melbourne with Coles’ Richmond Traders store rolling out AI-powered smart trolleys.
The smart trolleys are designed to make grocery shopping faster, easier, and more enjoyable. These innovative trolleys, equipped with cameras, a built-in scale, and AI technology, automatically recognise items as they’re added, allowing customers to bag as they shop, track their spending, and pay directly from the trolley.

Located at the front entrance of the Richmond store, the Coles smart trolleys will also sync with the Flybuys rewards program, enabling customers to access personalised offers and view in-store specials on the trolley’s digital screen.
Shoppers can also spin a digital wheel at checkout for a chance to win discounts, adding a gamified twist to the experience.
Coles is the first retailer in the Asia-Pacific region to launch Instacart’s Caper Carts, marking a significant step in blending the convenience of online shopping with the in-store experience.
The trolleys also integrate with the Coles app, allowing customers to view purchased items under their ‘buy it again’ list for future shopping trips.
