The entire herd of Asian elephants has now been successfully relocated from Melbourne Zoo to Werribee Open Range Zoo, marking the first time elephants have called Werribee home in its 41-year history.
After years of meticulous planning, nine elephants—including three adorable calves—were transported across 40 kilometres in air-conditioned crates over five days, reuniting in their sprawling new 21-hectare habitat.

The moment the herd reunited was nothing short of magical, with elephants touching trunks, flapping their ears, and trumpeting with joy.
“They are celebrating and really enjoying their new surroundings,” said Elephant Trail Project Officer and Zookeeper Lucy Truelson.
“They’re playing, exploring the landscape, and they’ve slept beautifully. All these things show us that they’re content, confident, happy, and thriving.”

This monumental move involved a team of 21 keepers, logistics experts, veterinarians, and support from the Department of Transport and Victoria Police. The elephants are now settling into their expansive new $88 million home, and visitors will be able to see them in a few weeks once the herd has fully adjusted.
