This March, West Footscray will come alive with the power of storytelling as the inaugural Footscray West Writers Fest (FWWF) takes over the suburb.
From poetry readings in wine bars to panel discussions in pizzerias, this vibrant festival will celebrate the rich diversity of Melbourne’s western suburbs through intimate and interactive experiences that connect writers, readers, and the community from 28-30 March.
Presented by West Footscray Arts and supported by Maribyrnong City Council, FWWF offers a dynamic program of free and ticketed events across some of Footscray’s most beloved spaces. The festival will feature site-specific storytelling, thought-provoking discussions, and hands-on workshops, all designed to highlight the unique voices and character of the west.
“We’re thrilled to launch a festival that is truly for the west, by the west,” say co-curators Jess Lilley and Donita Richards.
“This is about amplifying the voices of local writers and celebrating the distinct character of our communities. It also gives the community an opportunity to engage with familiar places in new ways, whether that’s hearing a writer read their work in a pizza restaurant or sitting down at a typewriter to write their own story at a local art studio.”
Highlights of the festival include Stories from the West, a launch event featuring writers Ernest Price, André Dao, and Maxine Beneba Clarke alongside Footscray High School students; In Conversation: Helen Garner & Bob Murphy on THE SEASON, a deep dive into sport, belonging, and community at Whitten Oval; and Stories From the Belly of the West, a closing event where local writers like Alice Pung, Jinghua Qian, and Emilie Collyer will share original stories inspired by Footscray’s iconic landmarks.
With a lineup that also includes Thuy On, Dr Vicki Couzens, Shu-Ling Chua, and more, FWWF is a must-attend addition to Melbourne’s literary calendar. Whether you’re a writer, reader, or simply a lover of stories, this festival promises to celebrate the talent, diversity, and spirit of Melbourne’s west.
