There’s a light at the end of the tunnel – pun intended – for a pain point with using Victoria’s public transport system. Tap-and-go technology rolling out across the network from early 2026, allowing passengers to pay for their travel using bank cards, smartphones, and smartwatches, making commuting more seamless and convenient.
The ability to tap-and-go has been long sought after by Victorian commuters – the option to pay without relying on a Myki would bring our public transport system in line with payment options that exist on public transport interstate and around the world.
In preparation for this transition, new Myki readers will be installed on metropolitan trains and at V/Line stations where Myki is currently used, followed by buses and trams. While the new readers are being put in place, they will initially continue to accept only Myki cards and Mobile Myki, with contactless payments introduced in stages.
A key step in shaping the rollout is a public trial currently underway in Wangaratta. Local bus passengers paying full fare can test the new tap-and-go system, helping authorities refine the technology before expanding it statewide.
The Victorian government says commuters will be kept informed as the upgrade progresses, including when and where the new readers will be introduced. With installation now underway, the transition to a more modern ticketing system is on track to make public transport more efficient and user-friendly for all Victorians.
