Bendigo is set to burst with colour, culture and creativity as the highly anticipated Frida Kahlo: In her own image exhibition opens at Bendigo Art Gallery on 15 March. To celebrate this exclusive showcase, the city has launched Fiesta Bendigo, featuring more than 70 Mexican-inspired events, experiences, and activities running until July.
Bendigo Mayor Andrea Metcalf hailed the exhibition as a major coup for Bendigo, highlighting its rarity and significance.
“This is the first time this exhibition has been shown in Australia, and it’s a unique opportunity to see Frida Kahlo’s personal items, including her fashion, makeup, and iconic artworks, straight from Mexico’s Museo Frida Kahlo,” she said.
Fiesta Bendigo promises to transform the region into a Mexican-inspired wonderland, with events ranging from the Taco Trail—featuring more than 20 local eateries serving up creative taco delights—to a lively Fiesta Bendigo Street Party in Hargreaves Mall on 3 May. Visitors can enjoy free family activities, vibrant performances by the Mexbourne Dance Company, and even hop aboard the La Música Tram for a party on the move.
The celebration extends beyond food and music, with workshops, film screenings, and art installations inspired by Kahlo’s life and work. Chancery Lane has been transformed into El Callejón Azul (The Blue Alley), featuring a stunning mural inspired by Kahlo’s vibrant home, while the Bendigo Visitor Centre and Railway Station boast colourful new artworks to welcome visitors.
