Melbourne’s arts scene is set to reach new heights as construction begins on The Fox: NGV Contemporary, the largest gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design in Australia. Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks announced that Lendlease has been awarded the contract to bring this visionary project to life in the heart of Melbourne’s Southbank arts precinct.

Part of the Victorian Government’s $1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation, The Fox: NGV Contemporary will span 30,000 square metres, featuring more than 13,000 square metres of public exhibition space, hospitality and event areas, and an expansive rooftop terrace.
The project also includes the development of Laak Boorndap, an 18,000-square-metre urban garden filled with biodiverse planting, public art, and spaces for relaxation.

“This is an exciting milestone for The Fox: NGV Contemporary, the transformation of our arts precinct, and for the future of Australia’s cultural capital and creative state,” said Minister Brooks.
In preparation for the gallery, the former Carlton United Breweries building was deconstructed in 2024, with 95 per cent of materials diverted from landfill and reused or recycled.

The Fox: NGV Contemporary is a collaboration between the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation, Creative Victoria, Development Victoria, the National Gallery of Victoria, and Arts Centre Melbourne. For more information, visit artsprecinct.melbourne.
