The mystery, romance, and grandeur of Broadway’s Anastasia will come alive in Melbourne this December, as the Tony Award-winning musical makes its Australian premiere at the historic Regent Theatre.
Inspired by the enduring legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov and the beloved 1997 animated film, Anastasia follows a courageous young woman, Anya, as she embarks on a journey from the fallen Russian Empire to the dazzling streets of 1920s Paris.

With a breathtaking score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens—including fan-favourite songs Journey to the Past and Once Upon a December—the musical blends history and fairytale into a dazzling theatrical experience.

Producer John Frost said, “The legend of Anastasia has intrigued the world for many years, and I’ve been wanting to bring this musical to Australia since it premiered on Broadway in 2017. It’s a story full of mystery and romance with a magnificent score that I know Australia is going to fall in love with.”
Opera Australia’s Acting CEO Simon Militano added, “We expect the glorious music, spectacle and intrigue of Anastasia will captivate audiences around the country.”

Having enchanted audiences on Broadway and across the globe, Anastasia arrives in Australia with a legacy of acclaim, including multiple international awards and a Tony nomination for Best Costume Design. Melbourne theatregoers will be the first to witness its opulent staging, intricate costumes, and powerful performances when the curtain rises this December.
Following its Melbourne season, the lavish production will tour to Perth and Sydney in 2026.
Casting for the Australian production will be announced in the coming months. For further information and to sign up to the waitlist to be the first to find out when tickets go on sale, please visit www.anastasiathemusical.com.au
