Three young Giraffes have made their grand entrance onto the sprawling savannah of Werribee Open Range Zoo.
They are one-year-old male giraffes David and Wayo (pronounced Way-ow), and the two-year-old Jesse. Fresh from their journey from Australia Zoo in Queensland and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in New South Wales last month, these curious youngsters are settling into their new digs with style.
Having completed their standard quarantine routine, the trio is now getting to know their surroundings, mingling with a bachelor herd of four fully grown adult giraffes and making friends with other fascinating species like southern white rhinos, ostriches, plains zebras, and antelopes.
The zoo’s commitment to the Australasian zoo breeding and conservation program for giraffes, classified as vulnerable, means these young ones have made their move as they’ve reached the age where Giraffes typically venture out from their family groups to join a bachelor herd – a natural occurrence in the wild.
