Following eight months of construction, Altona’s new pier is now open to the public.
This impressive pier became a reality with an $11.9 million investment from the Victorian Government. Stretching 310 meters with a modern y-shaped design, the pier is a great place for a morning walk with a coffee or a relaxing spot to unwind after work, offering a view of the sunset over the city’s towers.
The new pier provides ample space for people to enjoy and safer access for boating and fishing, thanks to an accessible low landing, and seats for rest or relaxation.
Altona’s original timber pier, dating back to the late 1800s, was a significant part of the suburb’s history. Despite undergoing repairs over the years, the structure had reached the end of its design life, especially with the impact of storms in 2020 and 2021.
Community consultation and planning for a replacement began in 2020. Feedback from locals and visitors helped choose the design, including a timber deck.
The old pier has been removed, and some of its timber was repurposed for seats on the new pier, paying homage to the heritage of the original structure. Other timber is planned for use in Hobsons Bay Council’s upcoming foreshore redevelopment as public art or furniture.
Beyond providing fishing and boating access, the pier is a valuable addition to Altona Beach, where people gather in the summer for various activities like sunbathing, beach volleyball, and swimming.
