The Night of Ideas (La Nuit des Idées), presented by the French Embassy in partnership with the NGV and the Institut Français, is a special event filled with talks, debates, performances, and more. It’s a chance to delve into thought-provoking discussions on global issues. Originating from the Institut Français in 2016, this event has reached over 190 cities worldwide. Now, for the first time, it’s coming to Melbourne on Friday, March 1, 2024.
The Night of Ideas brings together experts from various fields like science, activism, literature, and journalism to tackle important contemporary issues. This year’s theme, “Fault Lines,” is inspired by Nancy Huston’s novel of the same name. It prompts us to examine the divisions in our society and explore how we can bridge these gaps.
In the Clemenger BBDO Auditorium, top thinkers will explore today’s critical issues. Speakers include influential figures like Australian philosopher Peter Singer, known for his advocacy of veganism and bioethics; Nobel Prize winner Professor Peter Doherty, recognized for his groundbreaking work in immunology; Professor Lung Ying-tai, a prominent Taiwanese writer and former Minister for Culture; and Yalmay Yunupiŋu, an esteemed Yolŋu Australian known for her work in linguistics and education. Join us for a stimulating discussion led by these distinguished individuals.
Themes to be explored include:
- Fault Lines in Our Seas examines how we can protect our oceans from climate change and rethink our connection to the sea.
- Fault Lines in the Clothing Industry investigates waste and overproduction in the fashion industry, as well as solutions for a creative, sustainable and accessible clothing revolution.
- Fault Lines in Our Bodies & in Our Minds speculates what the future will hold for our physical and mental wellbeing.
- At a time where disruptive technologies, geopolitical upheavals and climate change are changing our perspective on the role of science in our societies, Fault Lines in the Value of Science will focus on the ways scientifical breakthroughs can affect our personal lives, both positively and negatively.
- For Fault Line in the Digital World, Global Chief Strategy & Impact Officer of consulting firm Palo IT Xavier Rizos will share his expertise on how technology and innovation interact with the environmental, geopolitical and social dynamics shaping our world.
- Gender Fault Lines and Heritage and Identity Fault Lines will discuss topics such as the complexities of gender and multiculturalism.
Director of the NGV, Tony Ellwood said the NGV prides itself as being a platform for robust discussion and debate within our community.
“Through the lens of scientifical breakthroughs or deep societal changes, this provocative, global event will explore how dividing lines can impact our everyday lives and our relationship with the world,” Mr Ellwood said.
‘This event is presented in partnership with the Embassy of France in Australia, deepening the NGV’s longstanding relationship with France and our connection to French culture,’ he said.
The event also offers exclusive after-hours access to the ground-floor of NGV Triennial, with talks and discussions taking place inside the exhibition and directly engaging with the work on display. NGV Triennial is a major exhibition of contemporary art and design featuring the work of more than 120 cutting-edge practitioners from over 30 countries and regions.
