The Regent Theatre will host the world premiere of Oscar© by Christopher Wheeldon commissioned exclusively for The Australian Ballet, the renowned choreographer brings to life the captivating story of Oscar Wilde this September.
Wheeldon, celebrated for his innovative productions, intertwines Wilde’s personal experiences with his iconic tales, showcasing Wilde’s wit and flamboyant style on stage. The biographical elements will be interspersed with dream sequences based on Wilde’s stories.
From Dublin to the glamorous social circles of London’s elite, Wilde’s fame soared until his infamous trial in 1895 in which he was accused of committing acts of gross indecency with other men, which was considered illegal under the British criminal law of the time. He was eventually convicted and sentenced to two years of hard labor, a punishment that ultimately led to his downfall and had a profound impact on his life and reputation.
Despite his downfall, Wilde’s genius continues to inspire audiences even 130 years later. A full-length narrative ballet over two acts, Wilde’s poignant morality tale The Nightingale and The Rose and gothic masterpiece The Picture Of Dorian Gray act as literary anchors, but the main focus will be on the incredible triumphs and devastating tragedy of the man who paid the ultimate price for his honesty.
Collaborating with composer Joby Talbot and set and costume designer Jean-Marc Puissant, Wheeldon promises a powerful production that will captivate audiences with its artistry and storytelling.
Tickets for Oscar© are on sale now. It’s playing 13-24 September at the Regent Theatre.
