Step into the vibrant world of the Pacific Sisters with FROCK A WHANAUNGATANGA, an electrifying exhibition and workshop series celebrating the Tāgata Moana (People of the Pacific).
Hosted at Bunjil Place in association with Asia TOPA and Arts Centre Melbourne, this showcase highlights the Pacific Sisters’ groundbreaking legacy of fashion activism and cultural expression.
Since their emergence in 1991 in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Pacific Sisters have redefined art and performance by blending Moana heritage with contemporary forms. This exhibition features intricate handmade garments, ancestral taonga (treasures), and immersive multimedia, offering visitors a rare glimpse into their 30 years of creative advocacy.
Attendees can engage with niu aitu (new ancestor) avatars, explore archival imagery, or participate in public adornment-making workshops, a perfect way to connect with Moana culture and leave feeling “fierce and fabulous.”
Curated by the Pacific Sisters alongside Jade Hadfield, this event amplifies themes of identity, environmental activism, and body sovereignty, showcasing the collective’s bold approach to urban Māori, Pacific, and Queer narratives. FROCK A WHANAUNGATANGA is not just an exhibition; it’s a celebration of art, activism, and community.
The exhibition runs until 8 March 2025.
