The 2025 Australian Open has smashed records, cementing itself as the biggest tournament in the event’s history with over 1.2 million fans flocking to Melbourne for three unforgettable weeks of world-class tennis.
This year’s Open was headlined by electrifying victories from men’s singles champion Jannik Sinner and women’s singles champion Madison Keys. Their triumphs were the centrepiece of a tournament that broke daily attendance records and surpassed last year’s overall crowd numbers by day 14 of the main draw.
Melbourne’s hospitality sector felt the full impact of the surge in visitors, with 93% of hotel rooms booked at the tournament’s midway point on Saturday 18 January, according to STR data. The influx of interstate and international tennis fans has not only filled stadiums but also delivered an economic windfall for the city.
The 2024 Australian Open contributed over $533 million to Victoria’s economy, and this year’s edition is on track to top that figure, adding to the $3.14 billion the tournament has generated over the past decade.
Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said: “Our team is proud to have delivered another record-breaking Australian Open, with more than a million fans once again enjoying world-class tennis and the crowning of two exceptional champions. The AO continues to bring people together in a celebration of sport, food, family fun and entertainment.”
